KY102: The Legendary Years
Max arrived in Kansas City in 1974 and was hired as an on-air personality and program director for the as yet unknown radio station: KYYS-FM/KY102. Using the knowledge and experience he had gleaned while at KLZ-FM in Denver as a starting template, he and his coworkers proceeded to reshape the musical and cultural landscape of Kansas City, and in doing so inspired urban legends that persist to this day. Billing itself as Kansas City's "lifestyle connection," KY102 was instrumental in offering a cornucopia of art and music to the people of this predominately conservative community. In addition to staging the same festival shows that had marked his time in Denver, Max also focused on intensifying coverage of film premiers, local musical artists, local nightclub activity, sports teams, and even went so far as to set aside airtime for a ground-breaking radio magazine that focused on arts, lifestyle, and entertainment in the Kansas City area. KY102 also preceded MTV by several years when in 1979 the station produced and aired a series of televised rock concerts called "KY102 Backstage" which featured interviews with artists and taped concert footage gathered when concerts were held locally.
Perhaps the most enduring persona that Max had ever adopted came as a result of the radio station's response to the extreme popularity and subsequent backlash to the new musical genre known as "Disco." Max donned a military uniform and WWII helmet and for a time became "The General" Max Floyd- leader of the KY102 Rock and Roll Army. Listeners were issued ID cards and t-shirts adorned with Max's visage, and disco destruction rallies were organized and attended en masse. Though conceived as a simple radio bit, the solidarity felt by the station and it's listeners cemented the connection between Max Floyd, KY102, and Kansas City. It was at this time that Max achieved mythic status, and forever became ingrained in the public imagination and history of Kansas City.
